My Shepherd Day 3

Psalm 23:1 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

Welcome back! On Day 1 we looked at scriptures about Shepherd which helped in our discussion. On Day 2 we looked at one meaning of Shepherd, Jehovah Rohi, which was to feed. God feeds us both physically and spiritually.

Today we will look at another meaning of Shepherd, Jehovah Rohi, which is to lead.

In my mind’s eye, I can picture a shepherd walking and all his sheep following after him. The sheep don’t know where they are going, but they can trust their shepherd to lead them in the right path. That is how it is with us. We can trust God, or Jehovah-Rohi to lead us in the right path. We can trust that He will not lead us astray or on the wrong path.

I like what Elizabeth George says in her book “Quiet Confidences for a Woman’s Heart” “… your Shepherd is a gentle, patient, and firm guide. And because of His character, you don’t need to know the path, the plan, or the future. You only need to know Jehovah-Rohi, the God who promises to care for you and to lead you. You can trust Him!”

Wow! How many times does God give us a piece of the puzzle and before we decide to move or act, we want God to give us the big picture? We want God to give us more. We just learned that one meaning of Shepherd, of Jehovah-Rohi, is to lead. We need to fully trust our Shepherd that He is looking out for our good, that He is not going to lead us somewhere that is not good for us.

Sometimes when God leads us, He only gives us one step at a time. When we take step one, then He gives us step two and so on. He is looking for our quick obedience in following Him as He leads us.

What really spoke to me is that as He leads us, He has our best interest in mind. And He knows the end before we know the beginning. We don’t have to be afraid that we don’t know step two or three. We just trust our Shepherd, Jehovah-Rohi, as He leads us to take step one. He knows all the details of where He is leading us. He knows what’s around the next curve. He knows what’s on our path. He knows because He is leading us. He is going before us. We can trust Him to lead us!

At our church, 2010 is Year of Fire. Our key verse is: Deuteronomy 9:3 (NKJV) Therefore understand today that the LORD your God is He who goes over before you as a consuming fire.
As I had been thinking about God leading us, the scripture really took on new meaning to me. It is another example of God leading us, going before us. As God is leading us, He knows exactly what is on the path as He has gone before us.

Let’s grab this concept of God, our Jehovah-Rohi, leading us. He will not take us somewhere that He has not already been. We can trust Him to lead us for our ultimate good.

Here are three thought provoking questions the author asks at the end of Chapter 1. Take a moment and ask yourself these questions:

1. How is your willingness to follow Jehovah-Rohi?
2. Are there any adjustments you need to make in your “listening” habits?
3. Do you have any corrections to make in your “following” habits? What are they?

Let’s pray. Father, we thank you that You are our Shepherd, our Jehovah-Rohi. We thank You that You lead us in the right path. Help us Father to trust you more in Your leading us. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Blessings,
